Saransk is one of the ecologically safest cities of Russia

Rinat Gizatulin, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation, presented the rating of the ecologically safest cities of Russia. The first places in the ecological ranking of Russian cities for 2013 took Ufa, Saransk, Vologda, Moscow and Voronezh.

There were 87 cities participating in the ranking: capitals of the regions and cities with more than 500 inhabitants. They were evaluated by the quality of air, consumption of water and its quality, waste treatment, premises management, transportation, energy consumption and the management of impact on the environment.

According to Mr. Gizatulin, the rating is formed taking into account internationally accepted indicators, adjusted to Russian conditions. "This is not a ranking of cities where it is easier to breathe, this is the ranking of environmental policy held by the city government i.e. how it meets international environmental policy", - said the Deputy Minister.

Saransk received the highest score in the rating on environmental protection.
